Leverage technology and succeed in organizational change | Learning & Development | Primeast

Change is a mindset. Technology is a tool.

The tech savvy millennial workforce may hold the key to more successful organizational change. They have been raised in the digital world. Organizations who can harness their ability and agile approach should be more likely to keep pace with rapid technological change, by leveraging technology in its change management strategies.

Technology is driving change

In all economic sectors, technology is driving change. Organizations who adopt technology and then continue to adapt to technological advances deliver greater connectivity, more effective information sharing, and more successful collaboration.

Effective change management utilizes technology to help break down disconnection in an organization. Technology allows you to share necessary information and knowledge, and connect people to the purpose of change.

Employing AI and ML in change management communication

AI (artificial intelligence) and ML (machine learning) have the potential to learn behaviors and automate processes and tasks. They can also be used to ensure that information flows in real time and that the information is disseminated to those who need it.

Traditionally, information has been cascaded from the top down. Modern communication technology can be employed to share messages more fluidly, across the organization simultaneously. Messages can be personalized for specific teams and groups, and targeted more effectively in flatter organizations.

Technology can also capture questions and concerns as they are raised. Captured data can be analyzed more effectively, and leaders can address concerns faster to combat resistance to change before it takes hold and spreads. Understanding of the what, why and how of organizational change is more easily measured. Engagement strategies are then developed more effectively, with guesswork taken out of the equation.

Selecting communication technology

For maximum effectiveness, ML and AI must be employed in the right modes of communication. As millennials become the largest sector of the workforce, the technologies they use to communicate will increase in relevancy. When communication is made through the wrong channels or using the wrong tools and technologies, those messages are likely to be missed or ignored.

Poor communication leads to poor engagement in change. Personalizing communication is not only about the words used, but also about the methods by which messages are shared.

While face-to-face communication is preferable, it is not always practical. Personalizing approach to the technological channels used to communicate helps to deliver the message to people when it needs to be received, wherever the employee works.

Learn how your people prefer to be communicated with, and then employ technology to ensure your message is delivered across multiple channels and that people receive the communication they need in the form that resonates with them. Just as change is most effective when made gradually, change communication is received most effectively when it is made gradually.

Empower innovation across the organization

Technological advances also allow organizations to get their employees involved in technological change in ways we may never have thought possible.

It used to be that apps were mapped out and specs given to IT teams to code. Collaboration in the process was limited. Today’s technology means that even those with no coding knowledge can become involved throughout the process of development. This helps to create more effective applications and a culture of collaboration that motivates higher engagement in continuing digital transformation.

Technology alone cannot drive successful change

While effective use of technology will smooth the path to successful organizational change, it is not a stand-alone solution. Technology supports the process of change, and successful change projects are executed only in environments which are change ready.

The success of any change project depends upon an organizational culture that embraces change. Change is a mindset. Technology is a tool to employ in the change initiative .
