Ever wonder what people say about you when you leave the room—and how that shapes your leadership?

The Challenge:

Meet Alex, a team leader who believes he is approachable and open. Yet his team quietly describes him as “guarded” and “hard to read.” In meetings, he encourages input but saves his own opinion for last, making others feel their ideas were heard but not valued. Alex’s good intentions are overshadowed by blind spots and unspoken assumptions, slowly eroding trust and energy within the team.

Strategize:

The Johari Window is a simple yet powerful model for understanding how self-awareness and communication shape relationships. It breaks awareness into four panes:

Johari Window model with four quadrants: Open, Blind, Hidden, and Unknown Areas showing self- and other-awareness traits.

Leadership growth happens when you expand the Open Area. Open Area leaders reduce blind spots by seeking and processing feedback, not just hearing input.  They shrink hidden areas by sharing more openly. The more transparent and self-aware you are, the stronger your credibility and trust become.

Dig Deeper:

Self-awareness begins with curiosity. Leaders who view feedback as discovery, not criticism, unlock their most authentic potential. Try these strategies:

  • Run a “Feedback Sprint.” Ask three people (a peer, manager, and direct report) for one strength and one growth area they see in you. Listen fully and explore what was said; don’t just respond.
  • Practice micro-disclosure. In your next meeting, say, “I’m working on pausing before jumping to solutions. Please remind me if I forget.” This simple act signals humility and invites collaboration.
  • Notice your triggers. When do you feel defensive, silent, or dismissive? Those moments reveal blind spots worth exploring.

Take Action:

  1. Open one window. Choose one behavior to make visible this week. This could be how you make decisions or handle stress to start with.
  2. Host a “Blind Spot Coffee Chat.” Ask a trusted colleague, “What’s something I might not realize about how I show up?”
  3. Model transparency. Share what you learned from feedback with your team. It builds mutual trust and normalizes learning.
  4. Celebrate victory. Reflect on how your Open Area has grown as feedback and trust deepen.
