Effective delegation is a key management skill and critical for team success. Develop others and free up your time for more strategic, planning, proactive or important tasks and activities whilst empowering your team, creating agility and capability. The temptation to 'just do it yourself' is very attractive particularly when you are busy. Often it feels like it will take more time to tell someone what to do, than it will to just do it yourself. The problem is that if you don't delegate nothing will change, you will stay busy, your team won't have opportunities to take ownership and responsibility for tasks and you become less effective.
If micro-management is the biggest threat to creativity, delegation is the greatest gift, when done correctly. The selfless leader actively seeks out opportunities to stretch and challenge their teams, helping them to develop their skills through showing, telling, coaching and mentoring. Delegation is a critical tool in developing your teams and when you do it well, your teams will thrive and generally rise to the challenge, often giving you back the important time you need to focus on strategic opportunities and projects.
