Summary of “Leading Beyond Sustainability”:
The 2020s present a decade of unprecedented disruption. The challenges of the climate crisis are manifest and accelerating, conflict in Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere have added instability to global governance and we spent the first three years managing the health threats of a global pandemic. Other sustainability challenges continue and are now better understood and framed thanks to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which were agreed and adopted by world leaders in New York in 2015. These were the focus of another of Clive’s books “Designing the Purposeful World – The Sustainable Development Goals as a Blueprint for Humanity” (Routledge 2018).
Since writing that book, the context has shifted considerably. As well as the obvious disruptive challenges described above, technology has evolved at a blistering pace. Advances in five sectors: energy, transport, materials, food and labour, combine and will transform the world as we know it. This has been well-researched by such thought-leaders as Tony Seba at the RethinkX think-tank in the US and, yet, the majority of the population, including many business leaders, remain unaware of the inevitable consequences and massive opportunities.
We have reached a point where people are largely numb to the ever-present news of threat after threat, challenge after challenge. It’s not that we shouldn’t be concerned. Of course we should. But many people are ready to welcome some good news and inspiration. Humanity is delivering a world that, in a few years, will be quite amazing, a paradise here on Earth. It’s time for leaders to tell a different story, beyond sustainability.
